In front of the coastal line of the 5 terre is located the Area Marina Protetta of 5 terre: the reserve is designed to protect flora and fauna on the conformation of the rocky coast are already at low depths, special uncommon in the rest of the Mediterranean see.

In 1997, upon application by the Province of La Spezia, the area of 5 Terre, together with Porto Venere and the islands Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, were included among the UNESCO World Heritage of humanity.
